Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em
A client whose business is all rolled up in tobacco was distressed to hear one of their most famous cigarette brands was being used in a most indelicate manner on an adult web site. Ever concerned for their employees sensibilities, and knowing that our investigators are not easily offended, they enlisted our help to cull through the massive website and find the image.
Within a few days we were able to grab the entire offending website, build a quick database to parse out each image and quickly identify the offender among the more than 10,000 images. We provided not only a copy of the image but the exact URL in question so they could avoid traversing the salacious site and take action to have the image removed.
Please Don't Call It That.
A client in the telecom field asked us to help them prove to their business people that a proposed name change was an exceptionally bad idea. Our client believed the 2 names on the table were already saturated in the marketplace for their specific services and needed evidence in order to convince upper management.
They came to us and asked that we dial down our usual screening and filtering, and provide them with everything we could find in related goods and services. We found hundreds of hits. Armed with that knowledge our client was confident they could prevent an expensive and potentially disastrous re-branding effort.
The Golden Age
We were recently hired to help a jewelry maker protect their brands on the Internet for the first time in their 75 year history. The first goal? To understand the scope of their problem, that is, how many people are selling goods using their flagship trademark improperly and convince upper management they may have a serious problem with unauthorized use among resellers.
We searched through normal web content to identify misuse and were also instructed to search through auction sites we might find with a particular jewelry of theirs and provide specific information on the auction and seller. They asked us to quit after a couple of hundred sites. Good thing too because we found hundreds of auctions in addition to resellers dumping overstock.
Trifecta!
A client came to us asking us to help identify illegal offshore betting operations using unauthorized alterations of its logo. Without giving away the betting habits of the Beagles, let's just say we were able to root out numerous instances of logos being altered and directing traffic away from sanctioned sites to those less scrupulous bookies. We provided contact info on the operators of the sites to our client who is now able to take appropriate actions.
Lipstick on the Top Shelf Please
A cosmetic company hired us to help police the use of their mark on the Web, to find entities that were deceptively marketing other products through the use of the clients trademark. In addition, they wanted to find any instances where their trademark was not being properly displayed.
Our investigators uncovered a number of entities using META Tags and hidden text to redirect Web traffic from the clients site to their own. We also learned that several legitimate users were not abiding by the royalty license of our clients product and logo. Our report organized these findings in a useful and manageable way, enabling our client to prioritize their protection efforts.
